The Breitling story

Léon Breitling opened his workshop in 1884 and the family firm went on to shape the modern chronograph: Breitling patented the independent chronograph pushpiece in 1915 and the second return-to-zero pusher in 1934 — the two-pusher layout every chronograph uses today. The Navitimer of 1952, with its rotating slide-rule bezel for flight calculations, became the definitive pilot's watch and has been in production ever since.

Breitling supplied cockpit clocks to aviation's golden age, put the Navitimer on astronaut Scott Carpenter's wrist in orbit in 1962, and built the Chronomat into a modern icon. Under new ownership since 2017 the brand repositioned upmarket, which lifted second-hand values for clean modern pieces while vintage Navitimers remain steady collector stock.
