The TAG Heuer story
Edouard Heuer founded his workshop in 1860 and the brand built its name on timing speed: patents for the oscillating pinion chronograph mechanism in 1887, dashboard timers for racing cars, and stopwatches that timed Olympic Games and Formula 1. The Carrera of 1963 — named for the Carrera Panamericana road race — and the square Monaco of 1969, worn by Steve McQueen in Le Mans, are two of the most recognisable chronographs ever made.
TAG (Techniques d'Avant Garde) acquired Heuer in 1985, and the brand's mix of accessible pricing and motorsport pedigree made it one of the best-selling Swiss watch brands in South Africa. That installed base cuts both ways for sellers: there are plenty of TAG Heuers around, but there are also always dealers with waiting buyers for the right models in the right condition.
What moves the price
