How to care for your Rolex
A Rolex is built to outlast its owner — but how it's treated decides whether it holds value as an asset or quietly loses it. The habits below cost almost nothing, and one theme runs through all of them: originality is value. Most 'improvements' owners make to watches reduce what dealers will pay.
Caring for a Rolex: what matters most
Rolex builds watches to be worn, and modern movements are rated for roughly ten years between services. The Oyster case is the watch's armour — but only while its gaskets are fresh and the Twinlock or Triplock crown is screwed down. An open crown is the single most common cause of a flooded Rolex.
Service through Rolex's own network or a watchmaker accredited on the brand, and insist on your original parts back if anything is replaced. A Rolex serviced with its original dial, bezel and bracelet intact is worth meaningfully more than one 'freshened up' with replacements.
Rolex care checklist
- Never let anyone polish the case aggressively — sharp lug edges and crisp bevels are where collector value lives.
- Screw the crown down fully after every use; check it before water touches the watch.
- If you swim with it, have the seals pressure-tested every year or two — it's a small job.
- Keep the rotating bezel free of grit by rinsing in fresh water after beach or sea days.
- Don't have a vintage dial or handset 'restored' — originality, even aged, beats refinished every time.
The universal rule: don't polish
Polishing removes metal — every pass softens case lines and rounds edges, permanently. Dealers and collectors pay premiums for unpolished watches and discount refinished ones. Honest scratches are expected and priced in; missing metal is forever. If you're preparing the watch for sale, clean it gently and stop there.
