Caring for a Cartier: what matters most

Cartier watches are jewellery and instrument at once, and most care mistakes come from treating them as one or the other. Quartz Cartiers need little beyond timely battery changes with fresh seals; mechanical models follow normal five-to-seven-year service rhythms — always through hands that respect the brand's finishing.

Gold and two-tone cases scratch in normal wear, and the temptation is to polish them bright before selling. Resist it: each polish removes gold, softens the case lines, and on older pieces can halve the collector appeal. Clean, don't polish.

Cartier care checklist

• Change quartz batteries promptly — a leaked cell in a Tank is an expensive mistake.
• The sapphire or spinel cabochon on the crown chips if knocked; be gentle setting the time.
• Leather straps are consumables — replace them freely, but keep the original Cartier buckle.
• Don't over-polish gold cases; honest surface wear reads as authenticity to buyers.
• Store away from sunlight to protect dials and lacquer.

The universal rule: don't polish

Polishing removes metal — every pass softens case lines and rounds edges, permanently. Dealers and collectors pay premiums for unpolished watches and discount refinished ones. Honest scratches are expected and priced in; missing metal is forever. If you're preparing the watch for sale, clean it gently and stop there.
