The Hublot story

Carlo Crocco founded Hublot in 1980 with a heresy: a gold watch on a rubber strap, named after the French word for porthole. It found its audience among royalty and yacht owners, but the modern brand was built by Jean-Claude Biver, who joined in 2004 and launched the Big Bang in 2005 — a layered, industrial chronograph whose 'Art of Fusion' mixed gold, ceramic, carbon and rubber into something instantly recognisable.

Hublot became the uniform of football managers, sports stars and anyone who wanted their watch seen from across the room, with FIFA World Cup partnerships cementing the sports connection. The brand polarises collectors, but the market doesn't lie: Big Bangs and Classic Fusions trade actively second-hand, and their owners upgrade often — which keeps dealer demand for clean examples constant.

What moves the price

  • Hublot depreciates from retail faster than most Swiss brands — which means second-hand buyers are plentiful, and dealers know exactly where the market clears. Competing offers protect you from lowballs.
  • Condition is everything on ceramic and carbon cases; chips and deep scratches can't be polished out.
  • Boxes, papers and spare rubber straps make a visible difference to bids.
  • Precious-metal models hold materially more value — know whether your case is gold, King Gold or steel before judging offers.

Selling your Hublot: common questions

I paid a lot more for my Hublot than the offers I'm seeing. Why?
Hublot's retail-to-resale gap is real across the whole industry, not just in SA. What competing bids give you is certainty you're getting today's true top of the market rather than one dealer's opinion of it.
Do dealers actually want Hublot?
Yes — it's a fast-moving brand at the right price point, and SA demand for Big Bangs is steady. Multiple bids come in quickly for clean examples.
My rubber strap is worn. Should I replace it before selling?
No — let the dealer handle it. Straps are consumables and replacing one rarely returns its cost in the offer.
